HOW TO PLAY: SPEARHEAD IN WARCRY!

Spearhead gets a lot of flack from some Warcry players; Mainly for the lack of listbuilding and small amount of units but there are some things I think that Spearhead does extremely well and foremost of those is the actual Spearhead battle pack itself. It uses cards to generate different objectives turn on turn and players both have to manage what they want to score as well as stopping their opponent from scoring themselves.

I've looked at the Spearhead format for spearhead for Age of Sigmar and I've translated that into Warcry, writing a completely new battle pack. We've got the cards, the Twists, all of the board layouts, and overall I think that it makes for a very compelling experience whether you prefer casual or matched play. You can find links to the battlepack, TTS decksheets and a .zip with the individual cards here:

If you want instructions to import the deck itself into TTS, you can refer to my previous article on the topic here.

SPEARHEAD DECKS

Spearhead decks are sets of cards that are used in Spearhead battles. Each realm battlefield has its own spearhead deck. Each Spearhead deck consists of 2 twist decks (one for each side of the realm battlefield) and 2 battle tactic decks (one for each player).

TWIST CARDS

Each twist deck is made up of twist cards. A twist is a special rule that applies to the battle round being played. Each deck of twist cards corresponds to a specific side of the realm battlefield.

BATTLE TACTIC CARDS

Each battle tactic deck is made up of battle tactic cards. The rules on each are split into 2 parts; a battle tactic and a command. You can either score the battle tactic at the end of the battle round if you meet its conditions (to gain victory points) or you can use the command on the card for a more immediate benefit. You cannot do both, so choose wisely!

BATTLE TACTICS

Each Battle Tactic has 2 components; The requirements to complete the battle tactic and how many victory points you score on completion. Some battle tactics have additional activation requirements, in which case follow the instructions on the card.

When you complete a battle tactic, first note down how many victory points you score and then discard the card from your hand.

COMMANDS

Commands can be used during the battle round instead of scoring the battle tactic on that card. Commands are extra Abilities or Reactions that can be used by your fighters during the battle round.
When you use a command, first declare that you are using it and then discard the corresponding battle tactic card and apply it’s effects. You can only use each battle tactic card once per battle round in this way.

OBJECTIVES

In Spearhead battles, objectives are printed on the surface of each realm battlefield (the objective is the whole circle, not just the symbol in the centre).

CONTESTING OBJECTIVES

In spearhead battles, while a fighter is on an objective (wholly or partially, or within 3” of it’s centre), it is contesting it. Each objective is named after a mytical godbeast, as shown below:

FIGHTING A SPEARHEAD BATTLE

A Warcry Spearhead battle is fought in a series of rounds referred to as battle rounds, each of which is split into three phases: the initiative phase, the reserve phase and the combat phase. Once all phases have finished, a new battle round begins. The victory condition will dictate after which battle round the battle ends and the winner is decided.

TWIST CARDS

One twist card is drawn at the start of each battle round. Follow the rules on it as soon as it is drawn.

If a twist card is drawn that requires a player with initiative or priority, apply it's effects at the beginning of the Combat Phase instead.

BATTLE TACTIC CARDS

At the start of the first battle round, each player draws a hand of 3 battle tactic cards.
At the start of each subsequent battle round, each player draws battle tactic cards until they once more have a hand of 3 battle tactic cards. Before they do so, they can discard any number of battle tactic cards in their hand. Cards are discarded face up.

VICTORY POINTS

Each player scores victory points at the end of each of the battle round as follows:
Score 1 victory point if you control at least one objective.
Score 1 victory point if you control two or more objectives.
Score 1 victory point if you control more objectives than your opponent.
Score victory points for each battle tactic you completed this battle round equal to the value of those completed tactics.

SPEARHEAD BATTLEFIELDS

Spearhead battles are played on Spearhead battlefields. Before the game begins you can either randomly or if you prefer, choose which side of the battlefield to play on. If you don’t own the specific spearhead boards, you can use the below templates for your objective placement and battle group deployments.
